Dental Care is Tough To Find for People With Autism and Other Developmental Disorders

Wade Banner, a Southern California dentist, recognized the challenges patients with developmental disabilities face in accessing dental care. In 2014, he launched a mobile dental program, making house calls to provide care in an environment where patients felt comfortable and were less likely to require major sedation.

Banner, who has a nephew with autism, explained his motivation:

“One of my main goals in starting house-call dentistry was to prevent them from having to be put to sleep, if at all possible.”

He also noted the lack of dental providers for patients who require general anesthesia.
