Dental Hygiene Tips for Caregivers of Patients with Special Needs

Special Needs Dental Care Tips from Dr. Banner

According to the 2010 Census Bureau, 19 million Americans have some form of disability, and 5 million non-institutionalized adults reported needing assistance with activities like regular dental hygiene.

Because of Los Angeles County’s large and diverse population, many children and adults with special needs live right here in Southern California. Whether you’re a caregiving organization, a personal caregiver, or have a loved one with special needs, you want them to receive proper, routine dental care to maintain oral health and prevent infections, tooth decay, or cavities—especially when medical diagnoses may make treatment more complex.

Here are some tips from Dr. Banner on providing effective dental care for someone with special needs:

1. Set the Mood Properly

Choose a well-lit area, if possible, to better see as you assist your patient. A calm, well-lit environment can make the experience more comfortable for both you and the person you are helping.

2. Communicate Clearly

Patients may sometimes be uncooperative or anxious. Always:

  • Explain what you are going to do before brushing or flossing.
  • Schedule brushings at a regular time, such as after sleep or a nap, when the person may be more receptive.

3. Move Slowly and Gently

Avoid quick movements. Use a slow, reassuring flow to prevent startling the person you’re assisting.

4. Provide Positive Reinforcement

If your patient can hear, give verbal praise. If they can sign, use signed encouragement. Always reinforce independent attempts at self-care.

5. Support the Head Safely

Always support the head and take care to avoid gagging or choking when tilting the head back. This is critical for safety and to prevent anxiety during dental care.

6. Use a Mouth Prop if Necessary

If the person cannot keep their mouth open long enough, a mouth prop can help.

  • Tape several tongue depressors together to create a prop.
  • Always consult Dr. Banner first to ensure safe use.

7. Know Your Patient

A special relationship develops between caregivers and those they assist. Use your best judgment when performing dental care, considering the individual needs of the person you’re helping.
